Five great you-pick farms

As summer rolls in, produce lovers take matters into their own hands at any of the numerous you-pick farms in the Bay Area. Here are five of our favorites.

By Scott Hocker

Andy’s Orchard
At Andy’s Orchard, you-pick goes uptown with a fancy name: Harvest Walk, a scheduled tour where a guide discusses the fruit (apricots and several varieties of cherries this month), and visitors pick and taste as they wander the orchards. 1615 Half Rd., Morgan Hill, 408-782-7600

Canciamilla Ranch
Brentwood is the source of some of California’s finest stone fruit, and you’ll find plenty of it here—six varieties of nectarines, three kinds of peaches, and Satsuma and Santa Rosa plums. Of course, picking fruit is hard work, so Canciamilla Ranch also offers cold drinks and a large selection of ice cream. 401 Eureka Ave., Brentwood, 925-634-5123

Moffatt Ranch
Bring your own containers to this Brentwood farm and fill them with sweet O’Henry, Fay Elberta, and Elegant Lady peaches. 1870 Walnut Blvd., Brentwood, 925-634-3049.

Phipps Country Store and Farm
Phipps is well known for its heirloom beans, but many people don’t realize that the farm also grows pesticide-free strawberries, olallieberries, and boysenberries that you can gather yourself. 2700 Pescadero Rd., Pescadero, 650-879-0787

Swanton Berry Farm
The wine-dark organic strawberries from this coastal farm are the stuff of legend. Grab a box, head to the fields, and enjoy them straight from the vine. At the farm’s Coastways Ranch location, you can also get your fill of olallieberries. 25 Swanton Rd., Davenport, 831-469-8804
